Welcome to

Blue Bird Ridge Farm is situated on 100 acres in the beautiful rolling hills of Northern Kentucky.  Located near the heart of Thoroughbred country (Lexington, Kentucky), we have selected the wonderful Haflinger horse to grace our farm.  Impressed by its beauty, versatility and disposition, they stole our hearts in 1998.  Since that time we have developed a breeding program that has some of the best bloodlines of the modern pleasure Haflinger horse.

We are committed to providing quality Haflingers for the family or for the performance enthusiast.  Handled daily, our horses are trained to all the basics at an early stage.  Each foal is imprinted at birth and learns early on the requirements for good manners and trust of the human.  As age permits, they are advanced in their training with the ultimate goal of learning either the discipline of driving or riding or both.  Each horse is evaluated and given the opportunity to perform in the areas that he or she does best.  We strive to match the right horse to the right person so that they each can enjoy a long-term relationship of enjoyment.

THE HAFLINGER HORSE

The beautiful Haflinger horse originates from the Southern Tyrolean Mountains, which are in present-day Austria and Northern Italy.  Travel in this area required the use of narrow paths that required the horse to be both agile and sure-footed.  The first documented stallion of the current day Haflinger horse was 249 Folie who was born in 1874.  His sire was 133 El'Bedavi XXII, a half-Arab stallion, and his dam was a refined native Tyrolean mare.  Any purebred Haflinger of today must be able to trace his/her ancestry back to Folie.

The Haflinger has a rich history.  They were used extensively during World War II as pack animals that could negotiate the narrow, dangerous paths of the mountains.  After the war, a very structured breeding program was developed, and the modern day Haflinger has evolved from that program.  Tempel Farm in Wadsworth, Illinois first introduced them into the United States in 1958.

There are many wonderful characteristics of the Haflinger that easily captures new enthusiasts.  The first characteristic that usually draws attention is the striking and beautiful chestnut body color and the white or flaxen mane and tail.  The second one usually recognized is their excellent temperament.  They love people and attention and make wonderful family horses.  The third is their versatility.  They can do it all: Western or English pleasure, trail riding, dressage, jumping, etc.  The Haflinger is truly a wonderful horse who has it all - looks, disposition and performance.
